Part Two: Project Three – Research

Belonged to my father’s father, grand-dad Fuller and became surplus to requirements on his death some twenty or so years ago. Has been hanging in my office/studio for over a decade and created very little attention in that time.

It measures 1.2m by 1.75m. and is of a rectangular shape, predominately of varyious fading shades of brown with some elements of red and green in the triangles in each of the four corners. The figures are those of a single fourteen point stag surrounded by my best guess, a fawn and its mother.

It came into my possession in the late 70’s early 80’s with the date of manufacture/making unknown. There are no markings as to where it was made and by whom.

It is made of a fine yarn possibly a wool blend and of a tufted process. My guess is that it was made on a loom because of the precision weaving of the warp and weft threads. I would need to explore the possibility of this being a commercial loom rather than a domestic one firstly because of the date I have placed on it and the fact that it looks more regular than I would expect from hand weaving.

I am using it as a wall hanging because of the possible fragility of its wear and tear on a floor. It has just now become a centre of attention in my study of textiles and an interest in having it dated, assessed and perhaps even valued.

Again my guess is that it was made at the time when these figurative designs were popular and possibly because this type of floor covering was a major item in a private dwelling rather than as wall to wall floor covering.

My interest is such that in my studies and research I will now be looking for information on this or similar pieces of textile artistry as I have no knowledge of  its place in society or culture.

I am particularly attracted  to its fading toning, subtle and defined images as well as the fact that the centre section where the deer are standing is of an oval shape allowing the four corners to have their own decorative design.
